Baukostenzuschuss

The Baukostenzuschuss is the amount a connecting party contributes towards the upstream grid, on top of the cost of the connection itself.

What the term means

Two line items that get confused

A grid connection produces two separate invoices. Connection costs cover building the link itself: cable, transformer station, metering. The Baukostenzuschuss is something else. It is a contribution towards what the additional capacity triggers further up the network, in substations and lines that the connecting party neither owns nor receives.

Generators and consumers are treated on different logic, and in a solar project with self-consumption both roles meet in one asset. If a project raises its import capacity, a contribution can fall due on the consumption side even where none is levied on the export side.

Why the number arrives so late

The amount is only fixed once the grid operator has studied what that specific capacity does at that specific point in the network. Before that there is no defensible figure, only what other projects paid, and the spread is wide: the same capacity costs nothing at a connection point with headroom and, at a congested one, a sum that turns the business case over.

That is why the connection enquiry is not a formality at the end of design. It is the step that closes the investment case. File it late and you plan for a long time around an open position.

What can actually be influenced

Connection capacity is a decision, not a constant. Deliberately capping export, adding storage, or managing load can move the threshold at which network reinforcement is triggered. Whether giving up peak export pays against the contribution avoided is an arithmetic question, not a matter of principle.

What this means for a project

In practice the Baukostenzuschuss is the most common reason a project turns between the first assessment and the final offer. Not because it is large, but because the first model carries it at zero and it then arrives as a single sum.

For the pack that means the connection enquiry belongs at the beginning, and until the answer lands the item is carried as a range rather than a number. A model with a range and a date on which that range closes can be reviewed. A model with an invented point estimate cannot.

It also makes proximity to a connection point with headroom a value driver of a site in its own right, standing alongside roof area and orientation.
